April 28th RedHawks Recap + Player of the Week

The Zoned Redhawks program turned in another successful performance this weekend after taking some time off for the holiday weekend. Both the 13U and 14U Black teams were faced with tough double-header tests this past Sunday, April 28th.

Pitching and defense were the story for the Black squad on this day as their staff combined for 13 innings of one run baseball while only allowing four hits on the day. Troy Sweeney and Cole Chirichello combined for the game-one shutout, each striking out seven batters in the process. Will Jennings put the Redhawks Black on the board in the third inning with a two-out RBI triple that drove in Sweeney. The Redhawks never looked back, putting up another four runs en route to a 5-0 victory over the Central Jersey Stampede.

Game two saw the Redhawks Black jump out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning, followed by five more runs in the second and third for a commanding 9-0 lead. With former Redhawk player of the week Nolan Leger on the mound, the Black team had nothing to worry about. Leger pitched five brilliant innings, giving up one run on one hit with five strikeouts for an 11-1 win. The Black team now sits at 4-0 and in first place in the USABL American North division.

The 13U Blackhawks also faced a stiff test against Fury Baseball on Sunday, but rose to the occasion with two well-played games. In game one, the 13U team jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the top of the first. They followed that up with runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to put the Fury away for good with a 10-0 victory, notching ten hits on the day. Tommy Denlinger pitched a gem to get the win, throwing only 68 pitches in the six-inning shutout.

Jumping ahead early was the theme for the 13U team on Sunday, as they raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Using patience at the plate to the tune of ten walks, mixed in with another nine hits, the 13U team pulled out another shutout victory, winning this one 9-0. Denlinger also had a tremendous day at the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI, reaching base five times, and scoring four more.

The 14U Redhawks Red were only able to play the first game of a twin bill due to some inclement weather, and things didn’t go their way this week. The Red team struggled to generate any base runners and didn’t string enough hits together to get the offense going. The result was a 7-0 loss at the hands of the Hillsborough Gold.

Overall, it was a very promising weekend for the entire Redhawks program, with all three teams going a combined 4-1 on the weekend. The three teams collectively outscored their opponents by a count of 35-8, showing the dominance that they are capable of. If these Redhawks teams continue to mix dominant pitching and defense with their timely, aggressive hitting, they will no doubt soar to even greater heights throughout the remainder of the season.
